The vibrant city of Cape Town recently played host to the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, and Intersex Association (ILGA) conference, and it was nothing short of inspiring. Iranti, as local co-hosts (with Gender DynamiX),  we are proud to have welcomed people from far and wide. This gathering of activists, advocates, and allies from around the globe brought together an extraordinary array of voices united by a shared commitment to advancing LGBTI rights. The conference not only celebrated milestones but also set a hopeful agenda for the future.

Some of the Highs include:

1. Uniting Voices Across the Globe

One of the standout features of this year’s conference was the sheer diversity of attendees. Activists from over 150 countries gathered to share their stories, strategies, and struggles. This exchange highlighted the global nature of the fight for equality while also emphasizing regional challenges and successes. The energy in the room was palpable as stories of resilience were shared—stories of grassroots victories that remind us why this work matters.

2. Groundbreaking Workshops and Panels

The range of topics addressed was impressive, covering everything from legislative advocacy to mental health support for LGBTI communities. A particularly powerful panel delved into the intersection of LGBTI rights and climate justice, an issue gaining traction as climate change disproportionately affects marginalized communities. Another workshop on trans rights shed light on the need for inclusive healthcare policies, drawing attention to urgent disparities across regions.

3. Cape Town’s Warm Embrace

Cape Town itself was an ideal host city. Known for its natural beauty and cultural richness, the city welcomed attendees with open arms. Local organizers and community leaders from across South Africa played a crucial role in showcasing the progress made in South Africa while acknowledging the work still to be done.

Hopes for the Future of ILGA

The conference celebrated the progress made, it also served as a call to action for the challenges ahead. While many countries have made significant strides in legal recognition and protection for LGBTI people, many on the continent are facing increasing hostility. Advocacy efforts must remain focused on securing fundamental rights, particularly in regions where LGBTI identities are criminalized. ILGA’s role in providing support and amplifying voices in these areas is critical.

Another resounding hope for the future is the need to prioritize mental health within LGBTI communities. From combating stigma to creating safe spaces, the focus must go beyond legal rights to ensure that individuals can live authentically and without fear.

The future of the movement lies in empowering the next generation of activists. Many young leaders attended the conference, bringing fresh ideas and innovative approaches to advocacy. Investing in these voices and creating platforms for their growth is essential for long-term progress.

A Shared Journey Forward

As the conference came to a close, the atmosphere was one of both celebration and determination. Attendees left Cape Town with a renewed sense of purpose, bolstered by the knowledge that they are part of a global network fighting for justice and equality.

ILGA’s mission is far from over, but the Cape Town conference underscored the power of collective action. Together, we continue to move toward a future where everyone, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression, can live with dignity and freedom.

In the words of one attendee: “South Africa sure knows how to celebrate and inspire!”

The next ILGA World Conference will be held in Buenos Aires. The theme for the 2025 ILGA World Conference is “The Power of Communities”
