Iranti calls on everyone in the sector to engage with the process regarding the Drafting of the Prevention and Combating of Hate Crimes and Hate Speech Bill (HCB). The due date for public comments is 31 January 2017. While this deadline is being challenged by the sector, we urge everyone to study the draft bill and respond.
Iranti is preparing a submission and would like to thank everyone who participated in the Public Engagement held on Friday 11 in Johannesburg 2016.

The Public Engagement was attended by a broad range of stakeholders involved in preventing, reporting and servicing the victims of Hate Crimes, including independent activists; representatives from Community Based Organisations (CBOs); representatives from Non-Profit Organisations (NPOs); and grant makers.

An Introduction to the draft Bill was given by Tshego Phala, Senior Associate within the Pro Bono Unit at Webber Wentzel Attorneys. This was followed by a Panel Discussion moderated by Iranti Director Jabu Pereira. Panelists were Sanja Bornman of Lawyers for Human Rights; Kelly Gillespie from Wits University; Juan Nel from UNISA; Maneo Mohale from Bitch Media; Joshua Sehoole from Iranti; and Mandisa Mbatha-Beckett from FEW. The Panel Discussion was followed by engagement with the delegates.
