We are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Imam Muhsin Hendricks, who was brutally murdered on Saturday, 15 February, in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. The targeted attack on the faith-based leader, highlights growing concerns about violent crimes and the safety of civilians in South Africa.

Imam Muhsin Hendricks dedicated his life to fostering inclusive spaces for Muslim members of the queer community. As the founder of the Al-Ghurbaah Foundation, a human rights organization supporting queer Muslims, he worked tirelessly to help individuals navigate the complex intersection of faith and sexuality.

Whilst the motive for this heinous crime remains unclear, the murder is strongly suspected to be a hate-crime, as Hendricks was well known as one of the first openly gay imams.

We call upon the South African minister of police and the Eastern Cape provincial commissioner

to take swift and decisive action in investigating this violent crime and ensuring that those responsible are brought to justice.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to friends, families and followers of Imam Muhsin Hendricks during this difficult time. His legacy of compassion, courage, and advocacy will continue to inspire many.
