MEDIA AND COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER

Iranti is looking for a dedicated feminist and experienced media and communications professional, to join our team as Media and Communications Manager.

The Media and Communications Manager leads Iranti’s Media and Communications team in overseeing all its internal and external multimedia activities across all media platforms to ensure that messaging is consistent and engaging and aligned to its strategic goals and objectives. 

ABOUT IRANTI

Iranti is a Johannesburg-based human rights organization, founded in 2012, that advocates for the rights and protections of Lesbian, Bisexual, Queer, Trans and Intersex (LBQTI) persons. Iranti’s advocacy strategy employs the tactical use of multi-media, research and public awareness initiatives to build and advance human rights for LBQTI persons in the region. Iranti is managed and led by persons who live and identify as Lesbian, Trans, Non-Binary and Intersex, as well as allies aligned with our mission and vision.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

We are recruiting a Media and Communications Manager who will build upon and implement Iranti’s media and communications strategy, and ensure that it continues to be effective in amplifying the organisation’s advocacy work, and building Iranti’s profile as a regional feminist LBQTI rights organisation. 

As part of their strategic focus, the manager will drive Iranti’s brand alignment in order to contribute to the organisation’s strategic growth.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership

  • Provide strategic leadership and vision to staff responsible for all aspects media production and distribution.
  • Managing, mentoring, training and guiding the multi-media Media and Communications team.
  • Identify and prioritise Media and Comms team assignments to ensure deadlines are met and review work to ensure quality control 
  • Develop annual Media and Communications work plan with realistic deliverables, in line with the organisation’s strategic plan.
  • Oversee day-to-day operations of Media and Comms Unit by assessing unit needs, setting staffing priorities and developing budget(s) within established guidelines
  • Oversee all official reporting for Iranti’s Media and Communications work, including narrative and financial donor reports, the annual report, etc.
  • Work closely with the Executive Director and the Management Committee in  ensuring a collaborative and strong senior leadership team.
  • Assist in budgetary planning for the broader organisation related to financial strategies and the funding requirements
  • Represent the organisation at events, press conferences and other media engagements including interview. 
  • Contribute ideas for new programs, researching and recommending innovative communication techniques.

Media

  • Conceptualise, develop, design, produce, and direct media (video, audio, graphics, print, multimedia, and other forms of digital media) projects
  • Oversee and guide Media and Comms team in the production, design and editing processes for media projects
  • Collaborate closely with Iranti programme staff to produce compelling multimedia content, with a strong Feminist and Pan-African identity
  • Conceptualise and design media advocacy campaigns that will help further organisational goals
  • Reach out to journalists, influencers, media and beyond in order to arrange story placement on a national, regional and global level
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with the media such that Iranti becomes the first port of call when media needs expert opinions on stories about and/or impacting the LGBTIQ community in South Africa and in the region.

Communications

  • Contribute to a fresh look and feel of the organisation and develop the website
  • Develop a national and regional database for media related service providers with agreed fees for various services
  • Create internal communications protocols and initiatives 
  • Oversee the writing and delivery of internal newsletters
  • Collating and overseeing production of monthly external newsletters.
  • Develop and implement strategic marketing and communications campaigns and strategies and monitor their success
  • Define key performance indicators for each communications channel which will indicate a campaign’s level of success
  • Oversee the creation of marketing and communications materials to ensure that it is consistent with the organisation’s brand

Programme Integration and Support

  • Ensure the integration and coordination of media production and Iranti programmes and projects
  • Collaborate closely with Iranti programmes team to produce compelling multimedia content
  • Research and understand key organisational challenges, target audiences, and environmental factors that impact the organisation’s programs and develops suitable responses to them.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Conceptual understanding of media and communications both in terms of mainstream and digital media
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience working in a senior media and/or communications and/or marketing or communications role.
  • Experience managing and mentoring a multimedia team and demonstrates skills in strategic thinking and campaign design
  • Experience in departmental budgetary and finance management
  • Proven success designing and executing media, communications and marketing strategies and strategic media advocacy campaigns
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and negotiation skills
  • Strong storytelling ability, versatile writing, communication and copywriting skills
  • Ability to work in high pressured environment while managing competing priorities and deadlines
  • Experience in media monitoring, analysis and reporting
  • Strong project management skills and capable of simultaneously managing multiple projects with different deadlines
  • Up to date on the developments and trends in LBQTI organising in the region and globally.
  • Knowledge and experience of working a non-profit environment, preferably on LBQTI issues
  • Possesses a sense of urgency; is self-motivated and detail-minded
  • An understanding and appreciation of the intersectionality of oppression and struggles
  • Up to date on media industry trends and able to stay ahead of the curve
  • Capable of working well as part of a team as well as independently
  • Demonstrated experience working with MS Office, social media and web content management systems
  • Experience in creating quality audio, visual, and print content for use on various platforms including traditional and new media as well as for reporting. 
  • Competence in French, Kiswahili or Portuguese would be a plus, but not essential.
